Given the scalp is the most absorbent skin on our bodies, it is particularly important to be choosing clean brands.
Many commercial shampoos and conditioners contain potentially harmful toxins that can pose health and environmental risks.
Common ingredients of concern include:
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which are harsh detergents that can irritate the skin and eyes.
Parabens (like methylparaben and propylparaben), used as preservatives, have been linked to hormone disruption.
Phthalates, often hidden under the term "fragrance," can also interfere with hormone function and may cause reproductive issues. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (such as DMDM hydantoin) are known carcinogens, while silicones like dimethicone can build up on the scalp, potentially leading to dryness and irritation.
Over time, regular exposure to these chemicals can have cumulative effects, making it important to know that the ingredients in your hair care products are safe.
Our Favorite Non Toxic Shampoo Brands
We know researching and switching all your products can be overwhelming so we put together our top three favorite clean hair care brands.
Under Luna

Under Luna is an herbal hair care line made in Portland, OR. They have done a great job of making it easy to select which products are best based on your hair care type and needs.
One thing that is different in using their shampoos and conditioners is the recommendation to use a “double cleanse” method where you shampoo twice. The first wash is to clean away grease and sweat and the second creates more lather and delivers the herbal goodness to your scalp. Their conditioner also makes an excellent detangler and can be used as a hair mask for added hydration before regular washing.
Rahua Shampoo
A plant-powered shampoo made with rahua oil and Amazonian botanicals. This gentle formula cleanses without stripping, leaving hair soft, shiny, and nourished for all hair types.
Acure
Acure makes a variety of different shampoos and conditioners that are well rated by the Environmental Working Group. These are also a great budget option and can be found at many grocery stores.
